Chelsea Center for the Arts
“Beautification Day” Success

The Chelsea Center for the Arts received new soil and had some plants rearranged on Saturday, May 3. Volunteers came with wheelbarrows, shovels, and rakes to lend a hand to the beautification project. “There were several areas where the foundation of the building had been exposed due to soil erosion,” says executive director Aubrey Thornton Martinson. “The goal of the project was to build soil levels back up and create beds for future plantings,” she says of the Saturday work day.

The CCA's landscape committee was integral to the process and includes Janet Alford, Rick DeTroyer, and Trinh Pifer with assistancLandscapee from Meg Gower. Volunteers for the day included: Janet Alford, Trinh Pifer, Rick DeTroyer, Amanda Becker, Mack Rufkin, Noah Rufkin, Jim Alford, JD Alford, Deb Hubbard, Dan Pifer, Leah Pifer, Maya Pifer, Sue Beale, Rob Riemenschneider, Ron Ruth, Tom Knox.

Trinh Pifer of the Garden Mill provided pansies for the flower pots outside the door of the CCA. “We made good use of existing plants, but hope to add more as plants become available.” Martinson added that the CCA is looking for donations of healthy shade-tolerant plants such as hostas, annuals, bulbs, sunflowers, or sweet woodruff. There are also a few spots where trees could be added such as weeping dogwood, Japanese maple, carpinus, carnelian cherry or service berry. Call CCA if you can make a donation.

The landscape plan devised by landscape architect Meg Gower is composed of curvy beds which snake around the building and includes a special bed to be planted and cared for by the Scottish Highland Dancing class at CCA. Martinson would like to thank E-Z Landscape Supply and the Garden Mill for their support of this project. On a previous workday, Chris Martinson and Robin Wagner installed new door closers on the front door of the CCA for a smoother entrance into the building.

The CCA shares its building with the Chelsea Children's Cooperative Preschool and the Purple Rose Theatre Company's rehearsal space.

Anyone who would like to volunteer for future CCA Beautification Days should contact Martinson at (734) 433-2787 or aubrey@chelseacenterforthearts.org.
